Rawlings ‘Killed’ Highlife Music – Gyedu-Blay Ambolley

Published

on

Ghanaian highlife legend, Gyedu-Blay Ambolley has disclosed that the late Jerry John Rawlings killed highlife music in Ghana during his reign.

According to him, despite the love and passion the founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had for music, it is during his era that highlife music falls apart.

Explaining his allegations to Foster Romanus on eTV, Ambolley said the late former president introduced two years of constant curfew which eventually saw the end of highlife music.

However, he bailed himself out that his assertion does not mean Rawlings killed highlife music deliberately but certain conditions he introduced did.

There was a curfew and this curfew was over two years constantly. The curfew was from 6pm to 6am so this meant that musicians couldn’t play their music to make ends meet”.

Gyedu-Blay continued that due to this, most of the musicians had to travel outside to Europe, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and other countries to do their music and earn a living. By the time the curfew was lifted, according to him, there were no musicians around.

That was when the spinners had to come and replace the musicians so despite having that passion for music, to fulfill his aim of unifying the police, the military and the civilians because of security reasons, he had to let the curfew stay as long as over two years”, he further explained.

Strongman Burner, formally of Sarkcess Music has revealed why his former boss Sarkodie likes collaborating with other artists instead of releasing more songs on his own.

We all can attest to the fact that ninety percent of Sarkodie’s songs are featured songs. Though Ghanaians have raised eyebrows about why he is into collaborations, the issue remains suspended since the provided answers do not look satisfying.

In this case, Strongman who has walked with Sarkodie for years has revealed why Sarkodie does more collaborations.

According to him, it is difficult to release a couple of singles as a rapper, adding that featuring other artists look easier for rappers since the featured artist will do all the chorus and hookups.

Speaking from experience, Strongman told Foster Romanus on eTV that seeing a rapper singing and rapping at the same time looks difficult as compared to a singer who can combine few lyrics and use it as a rap in their song.

He made this known while responding to a question as to why most of the songs on his newly released album titled ’10 am’ are full-featured songs.
