5 Classic Nollywood Movies Which Took Over Ghana In the 90s and 2000s

Published

on

There used to be a time when the movie industries in both Ghana and Nigeria were thriving immensely side by side.

Ghana had big, landmark movies at the time with massive stars who all grew into legend – David Dontoh, Grace Nortey, Grace Omaboe, George Williams, the comic duo of Santo and Judas and many others.

But despite a thriving industry, Ghanaians have always loved Nigerian movies, and numerous Nigerian movies became the stuff of legend in Ghana.

These are movies which were so good they became universally acclaimed in Ghana, even at a time when the internet was not around to shape all our opinions into one.
Below are five of such Nigerian movies which became cult classics in Ghana.

1 The Last Burial (2000)

Horror was a great genre of Nigerian movies back then, and in fact many of the films on this list would be about the genre.

The Last Burial tells the story of a man who joined an occultic group to escape financial difficulties. He enjoyed his life until he was scheduled to die, at which point his corpse refused to be buried.

The movie starred Clem Ohameze, Eucharia Anunobi, Amaechi Muonagor, and Sam Dede, among others.

2 Karishika (1996)

Aother movie off the horror list, Karishika is a real classic and deserves a spot on any list of the greatest Nigerian movies of all time.

It tells the story of Karishika, a demon sent from hell to come and deceive men and send their souls on the way to hell.

Many children and teens of the time had nightmares due to this movie, perhaps some still to this day.

Karishika starred Bob Manuel Udokwo, Becky Okorie, Sandra Achums, Obi Mmadubugo and Amaechi Muonagor, among others.

3 Igodo: Land of the Living Dead (1999)

This all-time classic is a mixture of horror and an epic adventure, and also gained a cult following in Ghana.

In Igodo, a land is haunted by evil spirits and the only way to save them is to retrieve a magic sword from the evil forest where no man goes and returns.

7 of the land’s mightiest warriors are chosen for the perilous journey, and only one returns.

Igodo stars Sam Dede, Amaechi Muonagor, Charles Okafor, Prince James Uche, Pete Edochie and Norbert Young, among others.

4 Sharon Stone (2002)

The movie which made Gennevive Nnaji a household name in Nigeria was also a huge movie in Ghana in the noughties.

Nnaji plays Sharon Stone, a young, beautiful and amoral slay queen who played men like a violin. Nnaji was a slay queen before it was a term.

The movie starred Genevieve Nnaji, Jim Iyke, Steph-Nora Okere, Kunle Coker, Emeka Enyiocha and Peter Bounor, among others.

5 End of the Wicked (1999)

We return to the horror genre for the final move on our list. ‘End of the Wicked’ was a classic which also gave those of us who were young at the time endless nightmares.

End of the Wicked is a story about the endless battle between the forces of good and evil, and how the evil ones plot to get people into their traps.

It stars Charles Okafor, Hilda Dokubo, Alex Usifo Omiagbo, Patience Oseni, Larry Okon, and Helen Ukpabio, among others.

Other great movies from the era which did not make the list but deserve watching anyway includes Isakaba, Oganigwe, Oracle, Blood Money and many others.
