Government has started processes to acquire bigger presidential jet – Eugene Arhin

Published

on

Government has announced plans to purchase a new presidential jet to cater for presidential travels.

Director of Communications at the presidency, Eugene Arhin, says the Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has already begun the processes for Ghana to procure the new jet.

President Nana Akufo-Addo has come under fire from the Member of Parliament from North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, who has accused him of wasting taxpayer’s money on hiring luxurious jets for his foreign trips instead of using the existing one presidential jet.

The government had explained that the current presidential jet was not convenient for official trips as it couldn’t take more numbers and had limited facilities for the comfort of a president.

Speaking to journalists at the Jubilee House on Monday, September 27, 2021, Eugene Arhin said:

You would recollect that when the government of President Kufuor left office in 2008, it had procured two jets – the current Falcon and a bigger one, but for one reason or the other, the bigger jet was cancelled, and we were left with just one. That has happened, but you will recall that the Defence Minister stated clearly that the government has decided to buy a bigger jet to save us from all these troubles.”

“I don’t want to go into the details, but I am sure that when the Minister gets the opportunity, he will give further information on what the government is doing in that respect, but I am sure of the fact that government is already in the process of getting a bigger jet for use”, he disclosed.

The debate on the presidential jet was renewed recently after Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed that he had filed two other urgent questions demanding disclosure of the full cost of President Akufo-Addo’s trip to the United States.

Mr. Ablakwa sought answers as to why the President allegedly chartered a luxurious jet that cost GH¢3.7 million for his recent trip.

“The President has [again] chartered another flight, which cost us GH¢3.7 million. I am filing two other questions on the latest revelations, and I am hoping that this time, the government’s ministers will not pussyfoot and run away from accountability as they have done all of these months,” Mr. Ablakwa said on Eyewitness News.

The Ranking Member had earlier alleged that the President spent an amount of GH¢2.8 million on his earlier travels to only South Africa and France using the services of a private jet instead of the presidential jet.

The Finance Ministry however avoided the question on the expenditure, and said that information ought to be provided by the National Security Ministry.

In his latest claim, Mr. Ablakwa said President Nana Akufo-Addo’s three recent foreign trips cost the taxpayer GH¢10 million.

But Eugene has at previous press engagements challenged the MP’s claims, describing them as false.

Let’s change our attitude towards the environment to improve sanitation – President

Published

on

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on Ghanaians to change their attitude towards the environment and improve sanitation in the country.

He said there must be a collective effort and a change of people’s behavior towards the environment to have a cleaner nation.

Speaking at the launch of “Operation Clean Your Frontage’ in Accra, the President noted that logistics, resources and statutes alone could not address the sanitation challenges confronting the nation.

Sanitation, he said, was a challange” that cannot be overcome not just by logistics, bye—laws and rules of engagement, but a change in our attitude and behaviour. “

Operation Clean Your Frontage is one of interventions under the “Let’s Make Greater Accra Work” agenda initiated recently by the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, to mobilise and empower all urban actors to respond to the region’s waste management and sanitation challenges.

The “Operation Clean Your Frontage” campaign would make it mandatory for Property Owners, public Institutions and the citizens to clean and green their frontage and all open spaces around their property

Accra, with a population of over five million people, the President noted, put a strain on utility services and sanitation in the capital city.

He said the launch of the campaign was an essential step to his commitment to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa, and charged the people of Accra to collaborate with the various assemblies and mandated institutions to make the campaign a success.

Alan Kyerematen never sold Komenda Sugar Development Company farmland – Ministry

Published

on

The Ministry of Trade and Industry has debunked media reports that the sector Minister, Mr Alan Kyerematen, sold parcels of farmland belonging to the Komenda Sugar Development Company.

In a statement issued and signed by the chief director, Mr Patrick Nimo, it said the Ministry did not have “the legal capacity or authority to initiate, negotiate and conclude the sale and transfer of any stool land assigned to the Company.”

It, therefore, described the allegation of selling some 125 acres of the farmland, in July 2018, to local farmers to distill local gin as absolute falsehood and maliciously intended to incite disaffection and mistrust against the Government, particularly the Miinister.

The Ministry assured the chiefs and people of the Komenda Traditional Area that the Factory would be brought back to productive operation, as reiterated by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during his recent tour of the Central Region.
