The Goaso Police Command has apprehended 75 persons in the Ahafo Region for flouting the Covid-19 safety protocols.

Among the 75 in the custody of the Goaso Police Division are health workers (nurses) and teachers.

The arrest follows a directive from President Akufo-Addo to the Inspector-General of Police to apprehend all persons who fail to wear face masks in public spaces or gatherings after the country saw a surge in the number of Covid-19 cases recorded.

Speaking to Adom News reporter Sammy Asare, ASP Danso Abeam said he was shocked when reports brought to him on persons apprehended included nurses and teachers.

According to him, it is worrying to note that persons who per their line of duty should know better are part of the culprits breaking the law.

“I was shocked this morning to see teachers and hospital staff who even work at the emergency ward as part of the persons arrested.”

ASP Danso Abeam disclosed that the number of people who fail to adhere to the safety protocols is alarming.

“Even those who pass through the community to other places can be seen in face masks,” he added.

He, therefore, urged all persons to put their lives first by wearing a face mask since the police will continue to arrest offenders.

The 75 persons have been released on bail with substantive sureties.

The head of the Goaso Police Division indicated that sanctions to be meted out to the 75 persons would be determined by the Ahafo Regional Command on Monday, January 25.

In similar events, some 85 persons are in the custody of the Koforidua Police Command for not complying with the Covid-19 protocols.

The offenders were released after receiving warning letters.

Also, Police at the Tesano Police Station have arrested 200 persons for failing to wear facemask in public areas.

Presently, the country has 2,799 active cases and 361 deaths recorded, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

A section of residents within the Sekondi Takoradi Metropolis have lauded the President for cutting down on Appointees in his second tenure.

The residents believed that cutting down on the number would not only save the government purse but allow effective work and development deliverables in real-time.

They were also happy that the Western Region has also received the appointment in the Person of Mr Joseph Cudjoe, the Member of Parliament for Effia and retaining the Western Regional Minister, Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah MP for Takoradi.

The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo -Addo, on Thursday, 21 January 2021 submitted to Parliament for prior approval through the speaker, Albert Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, some names for appointment as Ministers and Regional Ministers in his new government.

The last government had over a hundred Ministers which received public criticism.

Ms Ophelia Opoku Boateng, a journalist, said the reduction very laudable and was hopeful it would help to facilitate development in all the Regions.

“This somewhat slim Appointees will make accountability very easy and simple.”

Mr Redeemer Buatsi was however not happy with some of the people the President nominated terming it as square pegs in round holes.

“Someone like Peter Amewu who is an energy expert, why Railways and look at Adwoa Sarfo at Gender”, He retorted.

Madam Yayra Zenu still saw the size as big and a waste of national resources on them.

Mr Paul Amissah sided with the President on the nominations and hoped that it would go along way in helping the country’s development.

Parliament of Ghana will from next week begin holding virtual sittings as part of measures to prevent further spread of COVID-19.

This was announced by the Speaker, Mr Alban Bagbin in Parliament on Friday, 22 January, 2021.

One-third of the Members of the house will however be required to be present in Parliament with the others joining in the business of the house from their various locations.

The Speaker also disclosed that if there is a need for a debate, members will be expected to be present in Parliament.

The Speaker said: “Because of the COVID, I think we’re going to take some measures. We’ll be needing about one-third of members on the floor.

“The rest will have to do virtual parliament, you’ll have to be in your offices to observe proceedings, and as and when necessary, appear to contribute.”

The house is also considering holding sittings from the tent erected at the forecourt which was used for the swearing-in of the President to allow for the fumigation of the chamber and offices.

“We’re also making preparations, if possible, from next week to make use of the new tent, that is provided down there, where we used to swear in his Excellency the President,” the Speaker stated.

He also urged members of the house to cooperate with the Parliamentary Service to ensure a successful exercise.
