Akufo-Addo’s first term infrastructure development ‘best in the 4th Republic’ – Bawumia

Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has challenged anyone who has data to prove that any first-term government has provided more infrastructure than the Akufo-Addo administration to step up and provide the evidence.

Speaking on the sidelines of a COVID-19meeting at the Jubilee House on Monday, 4 May 2020, Dr Bawumia indicated that some members of the opposition NDC, especially former President Mahama, have sought to downplay the infrastructural achievements of the Akufo-Addo administration in the vain hope that Ghanaians would not independently check.

“But I can say without any fear of contradiction, the data shows that in the history of the Fourth Republic, there is no government that has provided as much infrastructure across all sectors in its first term than the first term the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. If you want to challenge that please bring your data”, he declared.

Recalling the precarious situation the Akufo-Addo government ‘inherited’ a little over three years ago, including four years of dumsor with its costs, negative industry growth, decline in agricultural growth, a freeze on public sector recruitment, abolition of teachers training allowances, abolition of nurses training allowances and the worst macroeconomic performance (2013-2016) since 2000, Dr Bawumia emphasised that the Akufo-Addo administration had not only reversed this rot, but had made giant strides in all sectors of the economy.

“The government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has been in office for a little over 3 years. Even though there is still a lot to do, any objective assessment of our performance will agree that we have performed much much better than the situation that we inherited at the beginning of 2017.

“All the major indicators – agriculture, industry, inflation, interest rates, job creation, education, provision of essential services, resourcing the security and anti-corruption agencies, justice delivery – and many more show we have performed better.

“We have done all of these, while providing infrastructure in schools all across the country to ensure the success of Free SHS, while building health infrastructure and constructing roads. Contractors are getting paid, every sector of the economy is witnessing major infrastructure development. All of these works are going on even now despite the global challenge of the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Throwing a direct challenge to the former President, Dr Bawumia stated: “The true test of the robustness of an economy can be measured in a time of crisis: Dumsor (internal) and COVID (external). What mitigating measures did the NDC under John Mahama provide for businesses and individuals? They rather increased electricity and fuel prices, cancelled teacher and nursing allowances, among others.

“We [Akufo-Addo government] have been able to do all this because we have built a strong economy and managing it in a way that allows us to continue to do these and more even amidst a global pandemic.

“The data is clear. My humble advice to the former President Mahama is to take a look at the data (not Green Book data) and try to understand it before you speak otherwise you will embarrass yourself.”

Credit Mahama for Tema Motorway Interchange, it’s his Brainchild – Sammy Gyamfi to Nana Addo

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has asked the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to give credit to former President John Dramani Mahama for his investments in the road sector.

Sammy Gyamfi made the remark on the back of the commissioning of the Tema Motorway Interchange project by Akufo-Addo today, Friday, June 5, 2020.

Sammy Gyamfi, in a tweet, insisted that the Tema Motorway Interchange is the brainchild of John Mahama and must be credited as such.

“President Akufo-Addo must learn to give credit where credit is due. Enough of the plagiarisation of Mahama projects. The Tema Motorway Interchange remains the brainchild of the Visionary John Dramani Mahama,” he argued in the tweet.

While commissioning the project, President Akufo-Addo said former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) claims of delivering unprecedented infrastructure never existed in reality but only in their Green Book.

“We made a pledge to the Ghanaian people to expand and improve the road network while closing the missing links in the network. We had to make this pledge because we know that the so-called unprecedented infrastructure development of the Mahama administration was fantasy; existing in the Green Book and not on the ground.”

The Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Kwame Agbodza, had prior to the commissioning asked President Akufo-Addo to acknowledge former President John Mahama for the newly constructed Tema Motorway Interchange.

In an article, the Adaklu Member of Parliament described as shameful, the “posture the President is seeking to exhibit with plans to take credit for the Tema Interchange Project.”

According to Agbodza, the project in question was started by Mr. Mahama during his time in office.

“Sadly, President Akufo-Addo has consistently taken credit for strategic projects initiated by his predecessors and like the proverbial ostrich, turn round to accuse his ‘benefactor’ of incompetence, and simply plunging Ghana into an abyss. I cite the Pokuase, Obetsebi Lamptey Interchanges, Kotoka Terminal 3, and Phase II of the Kumasi Airport expansion project as examples,” the article read.

The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has taken a swipe at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo saying there is no way the ruling government can be compared to the previous administration led by former President John Dramani Mahama.

Sammy Gyamfi speaking in an interview on Neat FM’s ‘Me Man Nti’ programme, Monday said: “Comparing Akufo-Addo to Mahama is like comparing Togo to the United States of America”.

According to him, “if you look at the achievements of former President Mahama between 2012 and 2016, it cannot be compared to that of President Akufo-Addo and Bawumia.

Even though the former President may not have been perfect, Sammy Gyamfi says he can be likened to New York while Akufo-Addo to Togo.

“When you talk of roads, schools, hospitals, and many others; I’m not sure this government comes anywhere near to John Mahama and I know Ghanaians have missed him and inasmuch as he is not perfect and somethings may not have been done well; overall Ghanaians will agree that if President Mahama is New York, Akufo-Addo and Bawumia is Togo”.
