Asantehene cautions Akufo-Addo against misleading reports from appointees

President Nana Akufo-Addo has been cautioned by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, not to act on reports from his appointees without independent verification.

According to the Asantehene, leaders might be misled by trustworthy officials who only give favourable feedback.

He, therefore, admonished the President to regularly visit key projects to access first-hand information on progress of work.

The Asantehene believes regular visits to project sites will help the President to accurately update himself on the state of progress.

Through such visits, appropriate decisions will be taken to the benefit of the people and government.

“It is good for the President to visit the projects himself. If you listen to reports from the people, they will always deliver the positives. But if you visit the projects, you will see the negatives and make necessary changes,” he said.

The Asantehene, however, wants the President to ensure development in the Ashanti Region by delivering on his mandate.

“Ashanti Region has seen some developments in your term. We are trusting you to complete the outstanding ones,” he added.

The comments by the Asantehene follow a courtesy call by the President as part of his tour of the Ashanti Region.

President Akufo-Addo, on his part, indicated government’s commitment to ensuring every region gets its fair share of the national cake.

“We haven’t been able to deliver on all the promises but we are doing well. In the area of roads, there have been massive improvement. There were delays at the Boakra inland port but we have found solutions so we will start soon,” he emphasised.

As part of the visit, the President inspected progress of work at the Kumasi Airport.

The upgrade of the airport to international status is 77 percent complete and is expected to be completed by August next year.

Project Consultant, Nana Ametepe, said the existing airport building would be demolished when the new edifice is completed.

Bawumia will contest for NPP’s 2024 flagbearship – Chief of Staff confirms

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia will contest for the flagbearership of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP, when polls are held for successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“When the time comes, yes, he will contest…It is in the papers that he is one of the front runners, but it is a bit premature. When the time comes, he will make public whatever his intents are…”his Chief of Staff, Fred Oware, told Accra-based Citi TV in an interview.

It is the first time that there has been a public admission from Bawumia’s office that he will contest to lead the party.

The Veep on Friday, October 15, 2021; presented cash sums to the party structures in the Greater Accra region.

An amount of 20,000 cedis was presented to the regional secretariat whiles 2000 cedis went to each of the 23 constituencies in the region.

Oware stressed that Bawumia’s financial donations were strictly out of his strong belief that the party needs to be resourced.

“He is a member of the government, we very well understand that without the party, there is no New Patriotic Party government.”

He stressed that, for Bawumia, once the political mandate is secured, party events and structures need to be supported by all government officials.

He said far from campaigning with the donations, he was making them in his personal capacity as an NPP member and sitting VP purely to sustain activities of the party, adding that it will not be the first or the last.

The NPP will hold elections in December 2023 to elect a new flagbearer for the 2024 elections. Other frontrunners include Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyeremanten and Food and Agriculture Minister, Afriyie Akoto Osei.

Allow open contest for 2024 flagbearer slot – Mahama to NDC faithful

Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he is open to the idea of a democratic contest when next the party elects a flagbearer for the next presidential election slated for 2024.

Speaking to party faithful in the Western Region on Thursday, October 14, 2021, as part of his ‘Thank You’ tour, Mahama said the National Democratic Congress, NDC, must support whoever emerges as its candidate after that election.

“From next year, we (NDC) will begin our branch, constituency, regional and national elections. From there we will do our flagbearership elections.

“The NDC is a democratic party so all those who show interest and qualify to contest must be allowed to do so. We must all support whoever emerges victorious into the 2024 elections, and I am certain that God will give us victory,” he said.

His views tie into that of Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu who in a recent interview with Citi TV said that the flagbearership slot had to be subjected to a democratic process.

His view is at variance to that which is espoused by MP for Odododiodioo, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and former deputy Sports Minister, Joseph Yammin.

The duo along with others believe that Mahama is the most marketable candidate of the NDC and any contender for the flagbearer slot will flop woefully.

Former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor is seen as the sole possible contender even though he has yet to declare any such intentions.
