The Electoral Commission of Ghana says it will definitely compile a new Voters’ Register despite calls for them to reconsider due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

There have been several calls for the electoral body to only conduct a limited registration exercise instead of compiling a new voters’ register.

Per the argument, the number of people that will take part in a limited registration exercise will be less than in a new voters’ register and can be controlled.

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) as you may recall opposed the EC’s decision for a new register before the outbreak of the virus with one of their reason being that it is expensive. Now, their argument is that it is not safe to compile a new voters’ register because of the coronavirus.

Meanwhile, they have accused the EC of ganging up with the National Identification Authority to rig the upcoming election in favour of the ruling government

EC relentless

Madam Sylvia Annor, Head of Public Affairs at the Commission says the compilation of a new voters’ register will definitely come on.

She allayed the fears of Ghanaians who are thinking of staying away from the registration centres, saying only 25 persons will be allowed at a centre at a time.

According to her “We will make sure people at a particular centre is not more than 25 including the officials. The registration exercise will be held for a number of days, unlike the election which is for a day; moreover; there are a lot of registration centres. Registration is going to be for a reasonable period; it’s going to run for some time for all qualified persons to be able to register.”

“We are aware we have a pandemic staring us in the face but despite that, we have a mandate; before we can start an election, we need a credible system in place for a credible election and that is why we have in place safety measures to ensure a smooth running; we have procedures and we are going to be very strict. We will make sure we are not going to endanger anybody’s life” she indicated while speaking in an interview on Peace FM’s morning show ‘Kokrokoo’.

Safety precautions

The EC, according to Sylvia Annor has put some form of measures in place to ensure the safety of Ghanaians.

This includes:

– compulsory wearing of face mask before registration, – use of temperature gun, – liquid soaps to be provided, – social distancing to be observed and so on…

The National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has asked the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to give credit to former President John Dramani Mahama for his investments in the road sector.

Sammy Gyamfi made the remark on the back of the commissioning of the Tema Motorway Interchange project by Akufo-Addo today, Friday, June 5, 2020.

Sammy Gyamfi, in a tweet, insisted that the Tema Motorway Interchange is the brainchild of John Mahama and must be credited as such.

“President Akufo-Addo must learn to give credit where credit is due. Enough of the plagiarisation of Mahama projects. The Tema Motorway Interchange remains the brainchild of the Visionary John Dramani Mahama,” he argued in the tweet.

While commissioning the project, President Akufo-Addo said former President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) claims of delivering unprecedented infrastructure never existed in reality but only in their Green Book.

“We made a pledge to the Ghanaian people to expand and improve the road network while closing the missing links in the network. We had to make this pledge because we know that the so-called unprecedented infrastructure development of the Mahama administration was fantasy; existing in the Green Book and not on the ground.”

Credit Mahama for new Tema motorway interchange – Agbodza

The Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament, Kwame Agbodza, had prior to the commissioning asked President Akufo-Addo to acknowledge former President John Mahama for the newly constructed Tema Motorway Interchange.

In an article, the Adaklu Member of Parliament described as shameful, the “posture the President is seeking to exhibit with plans to take credit for the Tema Interchange Project.”

According to Agbodza, the project in question was started by Mr. Mahama during his time in office.

“Sadly, President Akufo-Addo has consistently taken credit for strategic projects initiated by his predecessors and like the proverbial ostrich, turn round to accuse his ‘benefactor’ of incompetence, and simply plunging Ghana into an abyss. I cite the Pokuase, Obetsebi Lamptey Interchanges, Kotoka Terminal 3, and Phase II of the Kumasi Airport expansion project as examples,” the article read.

The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has taken a swipe at President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo saying there is no way the ruling government can be compared to the previous administration led by former President John Dramani Mahama.

Sammy Gyamfi speaking in an interview on Neat FM’s ‘Me Man Nti’ programme, Monday said: “Comparing Akufo-Addo to Mahama is like comparing Togo to the United States of America”.

According to him, “if you look at the achievements of former President Mahama between 2012 and 2016, it cannot be compared to that of President Akufo-Addo and Bawumia.

Even though the former President may not have been perfect, Sammy Gyamfi says he can be likened to New York while Akufo-Addo to Togo.

“When you talk of roads, schools, hospitals, and many others; I’m not sure this government comes anywhere near to John Mahama and I know Ghanaians have missed him and inasmuch as he is not perfect and somethings may not have been done well; overall Ghanaians will agree that if President Mahama is New York, Akufo-Addo and Bawumia is Togo”.
