You’re the only one thinking of a new jet in COVID era – Ablakwa to Akufo-Addo

Published

on

North Tongu lawmaker Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has criticised plans by government to purchase a new presidential jet.

According to him, it is concerning that government is thinking of a new presidential jet as the whole world is grappling with the financial impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

Speaking to Francis Abban on the Morning Starr Wednesday, the NDC lawmaker said Ghana’s current presidential jet is still in good shape and was recently used by Liberian President George Weah.

“This is the only country in the whole world that in the midst of a pandemic, we’re thinking about buying a presidential jet. In the middle of the pandemic that vaccines haven’t been adequately acquired to assure herd immunity, we’re thinking of a presidential jet.

“The current jet is in good shape, there’s nothing wrong with it and just last week, the Liberian Prez used it twice. The current jet has a minimum lifespan of 20 years and we are nowhere near that. I‘m totally outraged. I’m livid, disappointed in President Akufo-Addo, and honestly, I’m at a point where it’s clear to me that the President is not committed to the needs of the people”.

The government has announced that it has started the process of procuring a new bigger presidential jet.

Communications Director at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin speaking to Journalists on Monday revealed that the Interior Minister has already commenced the process to acquire the new jet to save the country from costs.

“You would recollect that when the government of President Kufuor left office in 2008, it had procured two jets – the current Falcon and a bigger one, but for one reason or the other, the bigger jet was canceled, and we were left with just one. That has happened, but you will recall that the Defence Minister stated clearly that the government has decided to buy a bigger jet to save us from all these troubles.”

“I don’t want to go into the details, but I am sure that when the Minister gets the opportunity, he will give further information on what the government is doing in that respect, but I am sure of the fact that government is already in the process of getting a bigger jet for use”, he disclosed.

President Akufo-Addo has come under intense criticisms from a section of the public after he abandoned the country’s presidential jet and decided to charter a luxurious jet for his recent trips to Germany, South Africa and the United States of America.

Bawumia will contest for NPP’s 2024 flagbearship – Chief of Staff confirms

Published

on

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia will contest for the flagbearership of the ruling New Patriotic Party, NPP, when polls are held for successor to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

“When the time comes, yes, he will contest…It is in the papers that he is one of the front runners, but it is a bit premature. When the time comes, he will make public whatever his intents are…”his Chief of Staff, Fred Oware, told Accra-based Citi TV in an interview.

It is the first time that there has been a public admission from Bawumia’s office that he will contest to lead the party.

The Veep on Friday, October 15, 2021; presented cash sums to the party structures in the Greater Accra region.

An amount of 20,000 cedis was presented to the regional secretariat whiles 2000 cedis went to each of the 23 constituencies in the region.

Oware stressed that Bawumia’s financial donations were strictly out of his strong belief that the party needs to be resourced.

“He is a member of the government, we very well understand that without the party, there is no New Patriotic Party government.”

He stressed that, for Bawumia, once the political mandate is secured, party events and structures need to be supported by all government officials.

He said far from campaigning with the donations, he was making them in his personal capacity as an NPP member and sitting VP purely to sustain activities of the party, adding that it will not be the first or the last.

The NPP will hold elections in December 2023 to elect a new flagbearer for the 2024 elections. Other frontrunners include Trade and Industry Minister Alan Kyeremanten and Food and Agriculture Minister, Afriyie Akoto Osei.

Allow open contest for 2024 flagbearer slot – Mahama to NDC faithful

Published

on

Former President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he is open to the idea of a democratic contest when next the party elects a flagbearer for the next presidential election slated for 2024.

Speaking to party faithful in the Western Region on Thursday, October 14, 2021, as part of his ‘Thank You’ tour, Mahama said the National Democratic Congress, NDC, must support whoever emerges as its candidate after that election.

“From next year, we (NDC) will begin our branch, constituency, regional and national elections. From there we will do our flagbearership elections.

“The NDC is a democratic party so all those who show interest and qualify to contest must be allowed to do so. We must all support whoever emerges victorious into the 2024 elections, and I am certain that God will give us victory,” he said.

His views tie into that of Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu who in a recent interview with Citi TV said that the flagbearership slot had to be subjected to a democratic process.

His view is at variance to that which is espoused by MP for Odododiodioo, Edwin Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and former deputy Sports Minister, Joseph Yammin.

The duo along with others believe that Mahama is the most marketable candidate of the NDC and any contender for the flagbearer slot will flop woefully.

Former Finance Minister Dr. Kwabena Duffuor is seen as the sole possible contender even though he has yet to declare any such intentions.
