Solskjaer believes United can finish top 4.

Published

on

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes his team will finish top four in Premier League this season.

United sit nine points adrift from Manchester City in fourth and despite the points gap and the quality of the teams currently occupying the top four positions Solskjaer is confident his squad have what it takes to finish the campaign in the Champions League spots.

“Of course I do (believe they can get top four). We’ve put ourselves in a difficult position but then if you look at the games we’ve done well in, we have beaten Chelsea a few times this year, we have beaten Leicester, we have drawn against Arsenal and Liverpool,” Solskjaer said. “So for me we need to improve on games where teams give us a different challenge. We have lost games we have dominated but we haven’t found the openings.

“I think now with Anthony coming back, if we keep him fit, it gives us a big big chance to claw back some points.”

Up next for United is a trip to Bramall Lane on Sunday to face an in form Sheffield United side who sit above Solskjaer’s side in the table and the Norwegian is having to prepare for a busy run of fixtures without a number of key players, with Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba still out injured. But the manager is confident they have what it takes to push up the table.

“For any team, this period with so many games will be important, and for us as well. If you look at the games we’ve got, we have Sheffield United who are ahead of us, we have City very soon who are ahead of us,” Solskjaer said. “We have Tottenham who have now got Jose. Everton, all difficult games. Villa, they have done well against loads of teams.

“So for us, just make sure we get the consistency of performances. If you keep on doing as we were before the last international break, I am sure we will move up the table.”

Andre Ayew struck a second last-gasp penalty to earn Swansea City victory over Middlesbrough and move Steve Cooper’s side up to third in the Championship.

Ayew had put the Swans ahead when he volleyed in his 12th goal of the season five minutes before the break after a defensive mix-up by the visitors.

But they looked as though they had been denied all three points when Sam Morsy’s deflected strike in second-half stoppage time brought Boro level.

However, there was still time for Jake Bidwell to be felled as he attempted to reach a cut-back into the area and the officials to award a penalty.

And, as had been the case in the win at Stoke in midweek, Ayew kept his nerve to seal the most dramatic of victories.

It means Swansea climb above Brentford and are a point behind second-placed Watford with two games in hand.

In doing so Ayew is the first african to equal Ronaldo Nazario’s record of scoring 4 penalties Consecutively.
