UK newspaper, The Sun apologizes to Thomas Partey

Published

on

UK-based tabloid newspaper, The Sun has finally rendered an apology to Ghanaian professional footballer, Thomas Party for denigrating him in a story about Arsenal move.

Thomas Partey was at the center of every transfer story as the window shut on October 5. As expected, securing a dream move attracted a lot of attention reportage from across the globe.

One which caught the eye was an article by the Sun detailing the rise of the Ghana star.

In the article, Partey was described as coming from a “poverty-stricken existence” and his hometown Krobo Odumase was also described as a “poor town.”

The write-up angered Ghanaians as they took to their various social media handles to lambast the author of that article and the media house as well – the likes of Nana Aba Anamoah and Asamoah Gyan waded into the saga.

Joy News Editor, Dzifa Gbeho-Bampoh took a bold step and sent an email to The Sun to correct the story and possibly apologize for the unprofessional conduct.

“I was offended because we must acknowledge people who have pulled themselves up to become something. By describing him and his hometown in that manner, we denigrate him and his hometown and the larger population of Ghanaians. I was very unhappy about it and I was actually incensed. I felt like if I didn’t write anything, I will just be shouting on social media to no end. So, I lodged a complaint to see whether there will be any difference. I am glad that in the end, they appreciated that there was a need for a more nuanced description of Partey and his hometown,” Dzifa Gbeho-Bampoh told Joy News.

The Sun in their reply to the journalist apologized for using clumsy language in what should have been a “positive” story about the player’s rise to the EPL.

Getafe 1- 0 Barcelona: Koeman’s Title Hopefuls Fall To Shock Defeat Of Their Own

Published

on

Barcelona joined rivals Real Madrid in suffering a shock defeat just one week before the first Clasico of the season, with Ronald Koeman’s men going down 1-0 to Getafe.

The Catalans came into the match knowing a win would see them draw level on points with Real Madrid following their defeat to Cadiz earlier in the day, but they spurned that opportunity with a loss of their own.

Koeman handed Sergino Dest and Pedri their first competitive starts as Barcelona players with Ansu Fati only on the bench. The visitors enjoyed the better of the first half and could have taken the lead had Antoine Griezmann or Lionel Messi converted one of their chances.

Barca were made to rue these misses as Jaime Mata gave Getafe the lead after 56 minutes, rolling home a penalty kick after the referee had pointed to the spot for a foul by Frenkie de Jong on Djene Dakonam.

Ansu Fati, Philippe Coutinho, Martin Braithwaite, Francisco Trincao and Riqui Puig were all introduced off the bench to try and turn the game in Barcelona’s favour, but they failed to break down a stubborn Getafe side.
